The console does work for me in Linux (screenshot from Chromium v 49.0.2623.108, on Debian sid: http://imgur.com/dAqMl80), but for some reason certain guest OSes don’t work.
Screenshot shows 3 guests, from right to left: Win Server 2012, Ububtu 14.04 vt console (no X server), and third is Ubuntu 15.10 with an X server running. All except the console have VMware guest tools installed. The only one that doesn’t connect is the Ubuntu 15.10.
ESXi host is 6.0 U2, free license.
